Hifi shops

Already more than a decade ago I started my carreer in a Hifi-shop. It was a famous and highly respected shop in the town where I grew up. When I was a teenager I sometimes went there and gazed at all the stuff and dreaming a way I would own it.

But I would never dream, about the fact that I would work there about then years later. There was an ad in the newspaper saying that they were looking for a new employee. I did not hesitate and wrote a letter with my motivation. I was invited for an interview and not long after that I got a phonecall from the owner I would like to give me a contract. I was more than happy, it was really like a dream came true!

What started as a dream, it ended in a nightmare. I was not taken seriously by my superior and there was a big competion going on between the staff. Also a lot of gossip among the guys, about eachother and collgues from the an other store. This was really what I didn't expect, but of course I was a rookie and I stayed humble.

Once an older couple came into the shop and they were looking for new loudspeakers. As my superior left them in the listening room for quite a while, I went inside to check things out. As I remember it, they were listening to a pair of Audio Physic Spark speakers. The man told me he was not really satisfied with the sound. He was an musician and played the organ. And mainly listented to organ music. Now the Audio Physics Spark are high quality performers, they are not suitable for organ music, simply because they are monitor speakers and don't go very low.

As I traded the Germans for a pair of English KEF Reference, it immediatly did magic to the man. He was very content with the sound of the KEF's, because they produced the so important lower octaves of the organ pipes. The couple didn't hesitate and took the KEF's in the trunk of their car. ( after they payed )

Of course my superior was not happy with what happened and claimed I ruined his strategy. He wanted to start with the little Spark speakers and then later introduce bigger ones etc. In my opinion the couple would have left the store, before he could have tried his full strategy.

What is my point? It is something that happens in a lot of hifi-shops. They do not listen! They simply want you to buy stuff, what they think is good for their taste of music and ears. Another problem is, when you go to a hifi store, with your lady. Most of the sales people do not pay attention to the woman at all. Maybe when it comes to the color, the woman gets involved in the decision. Just because they 'assume' the woman doesn't know anything about sound and hifi. In fact she is more like a burden, they the guys down to buy expensive high-end.

But it is a totally wrong way to approach and do business. If you give attention to the woman and make her feel she is important, the chances you will sell something increases dramaticly. Normally, when they want to buy serious hifi, they will come back later. They first want to go home and talk it over. See, and if she doesn't have the idea, you took her seriously she will probably suggest to visit another hifi shop first. And we all know too, when it comes to money, you are not in charge as well!

I am sure you have had these experiences too! Or maybe you have heard from some friends. If so , please share those stories with me and other readers. Of course good experiences can be shared too!

Have A Great Story About This Topic?

If you have a story about how you have been threated in a hifi-shop, especially when their loved ones, please share it! Of course it can be a postitive experience too!
